Take 3: New Version of Google Toolbar
Google released version 3 of its Toolbar today. It has some fun new features such as SpellCheck for web forms, WordTranslator, and Autolink (turns US street adresses into links to online maps. John Battelle mentions that:
I've heard through reasonably well connected sources that the company is not pleased with the scope of its Toolbar downloads. This release should certainly increase Google's user base. I asked Mayer how many folks are currently using Google's Toolbar, and she said - true to Google's stated policy of numeric vagueness - "in the millions."My guess is that means "in the low millions," and that Google would very much like it to mean "in the high millions."
If that is true, then why is it Windows and Internet Explorer only? Sure, Windows Internet Explorer is by far the largest chunk of the browser market. However, 25 million Firefox downloads is nothing to sneeze at. The popularity of Toolbar clone googlebar should be enough to show that there clearly is a demand for a product like that. Yahoo! just launched their Firefox version of the Yahoo! Toolbar. I don't see why Google couldn't do the same. Of course they'd have to build it first, but given the vast amount of quality Firefox extensions made by Firefox enthusiasts its hard to see why they wouldn't direct some Google Labs resources towards such a project. I won't even mention other platforms, but is Google perhaps getting a little too cocky?
